Quailpaw let his paws wander across the Pineclan territory's earth, their mainland and home. He had always felt calmed and more lifted when surrounded by the trees and pine needles. Not but a few pawlengths away was his mentor, Crowflower. His black pelted friend and mentor seemed to be walking calmly, scanning the area for plants and herbs that might be useful. Just like he should be doing. He let his eyes look around once again, wondering what they would find this time. Hopefully something useful. He thought, worrying that maybe he would not notice something and disappoint his mentor.
He was determined to find something now, even if it was something simple. Even something small and minuscule could save a cat's life in a heartbeat. He thought to himself, at the same time that he hoped the moment would never come. He didn't want to see any cat injured or in pain, but he knew that it was inevitable. Cats would always get hurt, they could survive, or they could leave this world forever. Life would move on, and only more and more cats would get hurt. Weather it would be minor or major, it would happen.
Quailpaw sighed, unable to get over the idea. It was a simple thought, but one that he could simply not ignore. He didn't want to see his clanmates injured, but that was exactly why he was here. He had to hold on to his motivation- he had to remember why he had wanted to do this so badly. He had to try and save the people he loved and cared about- his clanmates. Even if he wasn't very close to too many, he wanted to keep each and every one of them alive.
Quailpaw's eyes flickered back to his mentor. Surely he's never questioned his job. He knows what he has to do and he does it. . right? He wondered to himself. He seemed sure of himself, of his job. But. . maybe he would understand what he meant if he said something. . " Crowflower? " He called out his name quietly, still unsure of what he really wanted to say. He couldn't say that he was unsure of his job- certainly not! What was he to actually say then? Quailpaw put one pawstep in front of another, wondering why he had even said his mentor's name in the first place. " Uhm. . Where should we look first? "
Nice cover furface.

Life was going exceedingly well today, Crowflower thought. That wasn't to say that it didn't go well every day, of course. The last thing Crowflower was was miserable. He was just having a lovely day, doing all the things he loved, and he got to share his love and joy with a young cat who was eager to soak in the day with him. Well, ideally. Sometimes, Crowflower was uncertain of Quailpaw's opinion of him. Did he think he was doing a good job? He wondered, sometimes.
The last thing he wanted to do was pull a move like his own mentor had. He made an attempt to do things with Quailpaw as frequently as possible. The barely younger tom seemed at peace, though, as he walked along. Attentive, keeping a sharp eye for any useful plants, but at peace. Crowflower was content, for now, to simply amble along, keeping an easy pace, breathing the fresh, clean, green-smelling air of his home territory. There weren't many useful plants here, anyway. None that they needed, in any case.
Then, softly, a voice came to his ears, a voice calling his name. Quailpaw? What could he want? They were looking for herbs. "Yes?" His reply was gentle, as per usual. Quailpaw had sounded like he was wrestling with something, from his tone. Something he could help with?
A pause. An obviously strained cover-up. What was Quailpaw hiding?
It could wait until he was comfortable enough to address it himself. For now, Crowflower smiled, raised his eyebrows, and shrugged his shoulders. They weren't looking for anything in particular. Plants didn't grow in any specific area in their territory, he found. They just... were, or they weren't. Except, of course, watermint down by the border with StreamClan, but that was neither here nor there.
"Our herbs don't really grow in specific places in our territory, unlike they do in the other clans. There are plants scattered here and there, since we live in such a heavily forested region. I'd imagine that FogClan's situation is similar to ours, slightly. It's not a matter of 'where' to look so much as knowing what to look for." |
Flowers, he hoped that he'd made sense. As an apprentice, he had been very confused to find herbs growing, say, in a rotted out tree stump when he had found the very same ones half-way across the territory by some rocks a few days before. In PineClan territory, you had to pick an herb and search exclusively for it. Ruddy inconvenient, that. "Go on and try to find some chamomile. It's useful for calming nerves. Smallish white flower with a bulbous yellow center, looks a bit like a daisy with lots of petals. Start by searching for the color white." The color white. Really? Really now. Quailpaw was certain to respect him now that he'd given such sagacious advice. Could he go dig a hole and die? He smiled cheesily to make up for the horrid idiocy he'd just displayed, and prepared to aid his apprentice in the search. He'd really just chosen a random herb from off the top of his head and had no idea whether it grew nearby or not. Heh. Oh well. He was firing on all cylinders today, yes he was! Quailpaw watched Crowflower's reaction carefully just as he seemed to be doing to him. The older cat seemed to have bought his covered up question- but then again, he wouldn't have even expected the most naive kit to have bought that. So surely his mentor had seen right thought it and had just decided not to mention it, right? He couldn't help himself from considering what Crowflower would do if he knew, versus is he did not. Suddenly, he realized that his mentor was speaking and he was supposed to be paying attention!

Quailpaw nodded to his mentor, beginning to scan the area once again like he probably should have been doing instead of letting his mind wander. He kept his eyes open, but his thoughts continued to wander back to his thoughts. So many things wandered into his mind and he just couldn't help but be distracted. " Go on and try to find some chamomile. It's useful for calming nerves. Smallish white flower with a bulbous yellow center, looks a bit like a daisy with lots of petals. Start by searching for the color white. " Quailpaw almost froze at his words. Can he really tell that im that distracted? The large apprentice felt his heart sink into his stomach, feeling guilty for letting anything distract him from his time looking for herbs and for spending some well needed time with his mentor! His mentor must have given him the simplest task just because he didn't think he could think right now! Quailpaw felt so embarrassed that he just nodded a bit, before looking around once more. " White flowers, for nerves: Chamomile. Got it. " He said evenly, trying his best to look around at the forest instead of up at his mentor. The only thing he could imagine was a look of pity coming from his friend. Well this was getting off to a great start. - - - Word Count: 278 Notes: So they both think they're doing badly |D they're a wonderful pair <3 “speaking color.”[/blockquote]
