"With patience, Falconpaw." she said carefully. Nevermind Volepelt's insistence on violent methods. There was more than one way to eat a rabbit (or skin a cat). Perhaps it was favoritism that was driving her to be softer with Falconpaw. Even more more likely though, were her experiences with her brother. Otterclaw had not responded kindly to harshness, and it worried her that Falconpaw seemed to rely on accumulated scratches to tell him he was doing something wrong.
"You will not catch the mouse unless you try, and you will not catch it still if you do so without patience. It matters not if someone does not already know StarClan's glory- you must concede to show it to them. It is all around us. And to convert someone, you must convince them of this. Not many will change their beliefs at the drop of a leaf." she paused to make sure Falconpaw was listening, then continued, "You must take things slowly. Show them little by little how StarClan reveals themselves in our lives, though we may not always recognize their quiet way. Conversion will not-does not- happen all at once. So too, is the cultivation of hunting skill a gradual art."
Reedfoot stood, motioning with her tail for Falconpaw and Cranetail to follow. "I will demonstrate."
In the time she had taken to lecture Falconpaw, birds had begun to return to the surrounding area. The were scarce in number and skittish from failed attacks...still, they would have to do. Reedfoot crouched down to wait, trusting that her two companions would do the same. For what seemed like a lifetime she waited, a wary eye on the birds. They would have to feed sometime, and when they did-ah. There it went. A careless chickadee flitted to the forest floor to poke for what it might find in the way of food.
The she-cat crept forward with the utmost care, wary of the bird's fellows who might try to warn it of the danger. When she was close enough to risk a pounce, Reedfoot darted forward and dispatched the bird with a quick, silent bite.
"Patience, Falconpaw, is the key in all things." she studied him for a moment, then added, "When we get back to camp, you will eat something. It is not StarClan's will that you starve before you can know their glory in life. I am sure Volepelt will understand. Have you anything to add, Cranetail?" The last she directed at the white and black tom. He had been silent for quite a while now, and her purpose for bringing him was so that he might pass on some of his won knowledge to her apprentice.
