Fawnstep sighed with relief. Hope lifted her spirits, and she was careful to reign the soaring feelings in with practicality. Nothing was set in stone. They would have to talk to Tawnywhisker and Volepelt before they could even begin to let good feelings take over. Her mind was filled with so many doubts...how could they change the mind of a man who was too blind to see what havoc he wrought with his own paws?
They could be going into the lion's den with this proposition.
They could be going into the madman's den.
Nevertheless, Birchtail was right. There was reason within Tawnywhisker, and reason would win out. 'Order will conquer chaos and tenderness will tame brutality' Fawnstep held back a giggle at her own idealistic cheese-ery. Where was Arthur to give her a tap on the head and call her a silly she-cat? Why, if he was gone any longer she'd begin spouting sermons on proper execution of faith and lectures on the necessity of a kind paw when raising kits.
Oh wait. That's exactly what she had in store for Volepelt.
"Well, let's not dill-dally, Birchtail. The sooner we talk to Tawnywhisker, the sooner we can make Volepelt see reason."

For a moment Birchtail was confused and startled from being alerted from her prayers and daydreams, amber eyes confused. Then her understanding righted itself and she remembered their aim.
"Ah, yes! The only obstacle will be locating her..." The long-furred tabby looked around worriedly. Was the dutiful deputy organizing a patrol? It must be about noonhigh, and the fog was almost entirely gone.
Yes, she would probably be by the entrance. But...oh dear, what if they interrupted her? What if they didn't look presentable enough? Birchtail knew she was dithering, but she was starting to feel a bit afraid. Is this really the right thing to do? Help me, StarClan.
But the heavens gave no answer she could perceive in the quiet, clean dimness of the nursery.
Still, she supposed...well, moving would be good. She raised herself, fluffy tail twitching and stepped out into the sunlight, her pupils narrowing to slits, adjusting as the scents of the Clan became more prominent. Opening her mouth as well as her ears, the warrior tried to pick out the mottled she-cat's voice or detect her scent among the throng.
