Alexander grimaced as he the long, damp grass swept past his pelt. He'd only entered the forest a few moments ago, and he was sure he already looked like one of those rabid monster-cats that lived around here. His paws already had a slight brown sheen and his pelt made him retch. It was almost slimey with moisture. It was foul. Absolutely foul.
All of this for one of Mumsey's silly little errands. He'd never speak a word against the she-cat, respect him as he did, but she was a very funny cat. She was totally serene for most of her life, regal as always, and then suddenly she'd get snappy and tell him to go out and look for some smelly plant. Catnip, she called it. To sniff, apparently. What was the point of that? It just smelt like damp dandelions anyway. She always said he'd understand when he was older, but Alexander just thought she was, wonderful as she was, getting strange in her old age.
Oh well, fact of the matter was, he was here, trying to find this disgusting plant in the damp summer rain, wishing he were curled up on his radiator bed. He picked up pace. The sooner he got it, the sooner he could leave.
---
Eros thought he had never seen anything so funny in his entire life. Some strange cat was walking in the forest, stepping gingerly, trying to avoid any contact with the wetness brought about by the rain shower. He evidently thought that sneering at the water droplets would make them go away. How silly. The black tom obviously wasn't from around here.
Should he go up and offer his help? Should he stay and watch this humorous spectacle unfold? How did he know the strange tom wouldn't attack him? It wasn't likely, since the guy was behaving like an absolute priss, but still, sometimes it's the ones you never expect. And then he walked past Eros's hiding place, the gateway to his clearing, and the overwhelming scent of the Human Place washed over him. What was a pampered house cat doing out here? Of course, he and his brother had come from there, but that was entirely different. This tom didn't look like he'd experienced a single day of hardship in his entire life. Why was he here, then, in the forest?
"Excuse me," he called, since the tom had passed him and had almost rounded the bend. "Can I help you with something? You look a little lost." Foolish house cat, out here by himself. Didn't he know this was a dangerous place? No, he'd probably never even considered it, what with the time he spent grooming himself. It was obvious he spent a lot of time doing just that, perhaps even more than Eros himself. The stranger's black fur glistened even in the dull lighting of the rain. Eros gave himself a few self-conscious licks for good measure, but remained behind the bush. Maybe he could freak this stranger out.
Yeah. That would be fun. The talking bush of doom!
